Safety ? or overload ? Couplings are in a time of growing automation a kind of product which gains more and more importance. In comparison to other safety mechanisms like an electronic cut-off or the classic frictional slip hubs, the safety couplings offer different advantages. They feature extremely short response times (3 ? 5 milliseconds) which results in an almost on the spot torque break. So the safety of human and machines is assured in case of a machine crash. It is a reliable method to use safety couplings to prevent accidental personal injuries as well as long standstills and high maintenance costs. Furthermore, they are insensible against environmental circumstances like thermal fluctuation or contacts with lubricants which especially cause negative effects on slip hubs. The disengagement torque can be adjusted accurately by pre-stressed cup springs with a degressive characteristic. As soon as the torque achieves the preset maximum, the coupling disengages and the torque transmission breaks. This disengagement distance can be used to include additional mechanical or electrical equipment (sensor) which makes the drive cut off automatically. After the torque falls below the allowed maximum torque, the safety coupling re-engages automatically and continues transmitting the torque. Additional to the effect of overload protection, the KBK safety couplings offer, depending on which version was chosen, the added values of metal-bellows- or servo-insert- couplings. So they offer the advantages of compensating misalignments, extremely high torsional stiffness without restoring forces and backlash-free torque transmission. The version with the spider element has the ability to compensate crashes and vibrations and is electrical isolating. The incomplex design with few single parts and accordingly little mass and inertia gives the possibility of an uncomplicated integration of the safety coupling in almost every drive chain as well as a quick assembling/ disassembling without leaving any traces on the shafts. KBK Safety Couplings are available in the following versions: KBK/L (LL) Safety Coupling for mounting tooth belt pulleys, sprocket wheels, spur gears,...
